The Babylon Mitte is one of the oldest still active cine-
mas of Berlin and the only one surviving that was a
premiere theatre during the silent film era. It celebrated
its opening in 1929 with the movie “Fräulein Else”, star-
ring Albert Bassermann and Elisabeth Bergner. In that
same year the 'Babylon' began showing sound films; it
also began presenting special cultural activities for the
Jewish community. During the nazi period it served as
a hiding place for enemies of the regime.

This protected historical building, an architectural repre-
sentative of the Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity) art
movement, was designed as a cinema by Hans Poelzig
in 1927/28 and is today considered among the most
beautiful cinemas in Berlin. It's two theatres, with 450
and 70 seats, show a widely varied selection of films,
with special emphasis on contemporary german film
and international arthouse productions, as well as spe-
cial film programs for children and young people.
